BBC News apologizes for showing footage of LeBron James while reporting on Kobe Bryant’s death
BBC News was forced to apologize Sunday night after they showed video of LeBron James when reporting on the helicopter crash that killed NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, along with seven others. Bryant and the others were killed Sunday morning when the helicopter went down in Calabasas, California, just outside Los Angeles.
Besides showing video of James while speaking about Bryant’s career accomplishments, they also incorrectly reported on the end of Bryant’s career, saying that his career “was cut short by injuries.” Bryant, who retired in 2016, played 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers.
It didn’t take long for word of the error to spread.
An editor at BBC News sent out a tweet apologizing for the mistake, calling it human error.
The anchor, Reeta Chakrabarti, caught the error on the spot and apologized.
“Now just before we go,” Chakrabarti said, “in our coverage of the death of Kobe Bryant, in one section of the report, we mistakenly showed you pictures of another basketball player, LeBron James, and we do apologize for the error.”
